As the Mayor of Panevėžys City Vitalijus Satkevičius says Panevėžys can boast the fact of becoming the Lithuanian Capital of Culture. At the same time it is a huge reponsibility - we shall have to organise   events and projects which will justify this honourable and ambitious title. Not only the efforts of self-governance will be accumulated. The culture, art, education communities of the city should be involved.

The Department of Culture and Art has prepared the project PANEVĖŽYS- THE CULTURAL CAPITAL OF LITHUANIA for the city. Traditional and modern art together with the diverse world culture will be presented.

According to the Head of Culture and Art Department Loreta Krasauskienė the culture of different nations will be brought as a value as the topic of human communication promoting learning, cherishing and respect of other cultures. It would open wider horisons of seeing and thinking, involve into an active process of learning, provide the image of creative, friendly, tolerant, open and European Panevėžys.

A programme of three parts will last the whole year. The culture of 14 countries, the sets of different arts and projects, activities will be presented to the city community.  The programme of the Culture Capital is hoped to be implemented by the help of volunteers.

According to the decision of the Ministry of Culture Joniškis District Municipality will be the Cultural Capital of Lithuania in 2015, in 2016- Telšiai Town.

The Ministry of Culture has foreseen 100 000 Litas per year for the implementation of the programme of Cultural Capital.
