Commemoration of Freedom Day of Belarus

On 25 March, Panevėžys joins an international campaign to celebrate the Freedom Day of Belarus. This is the historic day marking declaration of Independence of Belarus. On this occasion, the historical white-red-white flag of Belarus was hoisted by the building of Panevėžys City Hall.
The Democratic Republic of Belarus was proclaimed on this day in 1918, and since then Belarusians around the world have been celebrating 25 March as Freedom Day, an expression of the unity of the Belarusian people for independence and democracy, national identity, civil cohesion and freedom.
Despite the fact that Belarus is an independent state today, the Belarusian people are deprived of the right to fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the country's Constitution: freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, freedom of opinion and belief, creative freedom and the right to vote.
