The Mayor was present at the Commemoration Event of International Holocaust Remembrance Day

"Today, we remember the saddest experience of Jewish nation, we remember six millions killed. Such is the number of victims of brute hatred with no mercy. It is good that Europe has awaken from a terrible nightmare. Unfortunately, it was too late and millions of lives have not been saved. Let this day be commemorated and remain an important one in Lithuania and Europe. Having saved past memories, we shall save the resolution to never repeat this tragedy again",- said the Mayor of Panevėžys City R. Račkauskas.
The Mayor of Panevėžys City laid bouquets of flowers at the monument and the former Jewish Ghetto.
On January 27, Lithuania together with the United Nations commemorates the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. On this day in 1945, Auschwitz concentration camp was liberated in Poland. On 1 November 2005 the General Assembly of the United Nations declared the resolution designating January 27 of each year the Day of International Holocaust Remembrance. The resolution rejects any deny of Holocaust, condemns manifestations of religious intolerance and violence against persons based on ethnic origin or religious belief.
